History: Brand, a noble from Arafel, came to the Black Tower at the age of sixteen. When he came to the tower gates, he was a true wilder, and had developed a block. After a year and a half of experimenting, he finally broke his block…the night he bedded his first woman.
Though he spent a lot of time at the Black Tower, mentoring Soldiers and Dedicated, Brand also participated in many battles. A strong channeler and a good student, there were few weaves he could not do. Still, he preferred teaching to fighting. For his skill in dealing with the Asha’man and his strength as a leader, he was selected to be on the council when he was only 43. He served on the council for over fifty years before being chosen as M’Hael when the old M’Hael retired.
Shortly after he was selected to become M’Hael, he was wandering the grounds of the Black Tower and ran into – literally – a shy young woman with golden hair and sparkling blue eyes. Though she practically tripped over her own feet trying to get away from him while stuttering an apology, she reacted more than a little coolly when he stopped her and asked her name. He learned that the girl – Shai Gratien – was from a small village outside of Caemlyn, and that she had come to the tower to learn how to channel. Much to her dismay, she was a very weak channeler so becoming an Asha’man was not an option. Regardless, he began courting her, doing everything he could to get her to open up to him. She gave every excuse imaginable as to why they should not be together – their age difference, his position as M’Hael, her weakness in the One Power, and more – but he refused to let her push him away. Less than two years later, he convinced her to stay at the Black Tower and marry him.
To this day, Shai is still shy but her door is always open to any Asha’man who needs an open and objective ear. She has proven invaluable to Brand, and the tower as well, handling many of the mundane aspects of managing the tower, such as overseeing the operations staff. She also excels at putting together parties and celebrations, and usually oversees them as well.
Brand’s love for her is clear whenever the two are together, and anyone who dares treat his wife with disrespect receives only one warning before being shown the tower gates.
